Help For Heroes Help for Heroes - charity cycle ride

Andrew McGonnell, Assistant Manager at Arnold Laver's Depot in Newcastle, has joined a team of South Tyneside police officers to help raise funds for our fighting forces.

Andrew, an ex-special constable and seven members of the Jarrow and Hebburn Neighbourhood Policing team swapped patrol cars for pedal power to cycle 100 miles, each accompanied by two others playing vital support roles.

The team has set a target of raising £1,000 on the way for Help for Heroes. Setting off from Hebburn Police Station on Friday 21st May they have taken part in a gruelling one-day ride to their destination, RAF Kinloss on the Moray Firth, Scotland.

Charity fundraising from the Hebburn and Jarrow team has also reached a milestone as this is the 25th year an event has been organised to give worthy causes a cash boost.

Sgt McCabe said: 'Over the years, I have persuaded the team or shift I work with to raise money for charitable causes and this has always been charities local to our station.

'However, this year for the 25th event, we decided to raise money for Help The Heroes charity.

As well as it being a significant charity to myself and Pc Burrows, most people have a family member or know of someone in the forces and it's only right this charity is well supported.'

Andrew commented 'although I am no longer part of the Police service, each year I always take part in the fund raising activities and if we can raise our target figure it will certainly have been worth all the training and hard work.'
